Pembroke, South Pembrokeshire
IKO Experience runs guided half-day sea kayak and coasteering trips from the Pembrokeshire coast, with technical kit, safety cover and route judgement included.
What Is Sold
IKO Experience sells guided half-day sea kayak and coasteering trips around Pembroke, Tenby, Stackpole and Freshwater East. A half-day means four hours in the diary, including briefing, kit issue, route movement, water time and return of equipment.
The guide chooses the workable coast, brings the technical kit, watches the conditions and keeps the group inside the day’s limits. Visitors bring swimwear, shoes that can get wet, a towel, warm layers for afterwards and enough honesty about swimming confidence to help the route choice.
Four hours including briefing and kit issue. Sheltered bays, short crossings or limestone edges depending on wind and tide.
Swims, scrambling, ledges and optional jumps for swimmers aged 12 and over. Site chosen for sea state and group capability.
A half-day for families, friends or small groups who want the diary held and the route negotiated around them.
“The route is chosen the evening before, not promised six weeks out.”
Carys’s Favourite Decision
When the tide, wind and group line up, the Stackpole Quay to Barafundle piece of coast can feel like the day Pembrokeshire was invented for small boats. The limestone sits pale above clear water, the archways hold pockets of green light, and the beach arrives as a proper reveal rather than a car park destination. It is the route visitors often ask for because they have seen the photographs and heard the name.
Carys does not put it on the calendar as a fixed promise. Stackpole can be awkward in the wrong swell. A gentle forecast from inland can still leave rebound off the rock. A group that is happy in sheltered water may not enjoy the extra texture along the outside edge. On those days, forcing the original idea turns a good half-day into a managing exercise, and that is not the product IKO Experience is trying to sell.
The better judgement is sometimes to use Stackpole Quay as the meeting point, look at the sea with everyone standing there in kit, and then make a shorter, cleaner plan. Other days the move is Freshwater East for a more forgiving paddle, Angle for wind cover, or Pembroke Castle Mill Pond when the group needs a first session that feels composed rather than exposed. Nobody has paid for stubbornness. They have paid for a guide who knows when the famous line is on and when it can wait.
That is why the limestone coast is still special here. It is not treated as a backdrop to be consumed. It is treated as a place with tide, swell, bird life, other users, rescue implications and small human confidence levels that change by the hour.
Proof And Practice
Booking Summary
Public kayak sessions are £58 per adult and £48 per junior aged 12 to 17. Public coasteering is £62 per person. A family kayak session is £195 for 2 adults and 2 juniors, normally 09:00 to 12:30 on a sheltered-water route.
Public session bookings close 18 hours before departure. Private trips normally need 7 days notice. Peak August Saturdays often book 3 weeks ahead. Private groups pay a 25% deposit at booking, with the balance due 5 days before the trip.
Unsafe sea state results in a sheltered alternative, a reschedule or a full refund. Weather moves are made by IKO Experience, not by a fixed venue promise.
